Stepping into Spring

4/4/2025

There is a wealth of evidence to show that spending time in green spaces is so important for both physical and mental health – and with the skies of winter giving way to the vibrant hues of spring, there's no better time to step outside.

Just 30 minutes a day spent outside is proven to boost happiness, reduce anxiety and help us sleep better – and this no less important as we age.

Levels of activity will differ for everyone, but we are committed to supporting our service-users to access time in nature in every way possible, no matter how small. From a gentle stroll to a quiet cup of tea in the garden.
Here we take a quick look at the bountiful benefits:

1. Boosting Physical Health

Walking or sitting out in the fresh spring air is a fantastic way to improve cardiovascular health, maintain mobility, and strengthen muscles and joints. Gentle exercise, such as a stroll through a local park, can help lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease.

2. Enhancing Mental Wellbeing

Spending time outdoors has been linked to reduced stress and improved mood. Exposure to natural light increases the production of serotonin, often called the "feel-good hormone," which helps combat anxiety and low mood.
Picture
3. Connecting with Nature
Spring is a season of renewal, and being outside allows us to witness the beauty of blossoming flowers, chirping birds, and budding trees. This connection with nature can be incredibly uplifting and provide a sense of peace and contentment.

4. Encouraging Social Interaction

Warmer weather provides more opportunities for social engagement, helping to reduce the social isolation that can become all too common as we age. From a walk or a sit in the park to a chat with a neighbour in the garden, it’s a really positive way to maintain and establish connections.

5. Increasing Vitamin D Levels

With more daylight hours, getting outside helps the body absorb vitamin D from sunlight, which is essential for bone health and immune function. Many older adults in the UK are at risk of vitamin D deficiency, making spring a crucial time to replenish those levels naturally.

My journey with VCP

2/5/2025

What's it really like to become one of our carers?
Om joined us whilst studying computer science - and quickly realised he had found far more than a job.
We're very grateful to Om for sharing his story with us, and for becoming such an invaluable member of the VCP family.
"My name is Om, and I am proud to be a member of the team at Vincentian Care Plus.

Originally from India, I arrived in the UK in September 2022 to pursue an MSc in Computer Science with a specialisation in Network Engineering. After settling in, I joined VCP in February 2023 as a carer, working part-time while balancing my studies.

Initially, my decision to join VCP was motivated by the need to secure financial stability to support my living expenses. However, as I began working closely with our Service Users, my perspective shifted significantly. What started as just a job quickly evolved into something much deeper.
I developed a genuine passion for my role as a carer, serving the community and forming meaningful relationships with the individuals I supported. Within a few weeks, I found myself forming close bonds with each Service user, and we became like family.

The carer role allowed me to immerse myself in different cultures and spend quality time with incredible individuals, enriching my life in ways I hadn’t anticipated. Upon completing my MSc, I became aware of the Care Coordinator vacancy. Driven by a desire to make a greater impact, I applied for the position, eager to see where this new chapter might take me.
Picture
The interview process went smoothly, and I was delighted to be promoted from a Carer to a Care Coordinator - a line manager responsible for overseeing a team of Carers and the management of Service User visits. Transitioning into this new role felt natural, thanks to the strong relationships and mutual respect I had cultivated with my colleagues in the field.

As a Care Coordinator, my primary focus has been on addressing the challenges I encountered as a Carer. I’ve worked tirelessly to improve processes, ensuring a better experience for both Carers and Service Users alike. This includes prioritising continuity of care, minimising disruptions, and managing weekend challenges such as travel time and resource allocation.
Weekends often present unique difficulties as covering visits when someone is unavailable can be particularly demanding, but I’ve developed effective strategies, i.e. travel time, to navigate these challenges and maintain seamless care.

Through consistent effort and dedication, management recognised my contributions and entrusted me with a greater responsibility - to oversee the primary patch that serves as a cornerstone for VCP.

This role has further reinforced my commitment to delivering exceptional care and ensuring the wellbeing of our cherished Service Users.
Picture
I am immensely grateful to the VCP team for their unwavering support and belief in my potential. This recognition has been a powerful motivator, inspiring me to strive for excellence in every task.

My journey from Carer to Care Coordinator has been a deeply rewarding and transformative experience, and I am honoured to be part of a team that is truly dedicated to making a meaningful difference in people’s lives."

We're a finalist in the Home Care Awards!

1/27/2025

Vincentian Care Plus has been chosen as a finalist in the Home Care Awards 2025!

The recognition - in the Specialist Care Expertise category – centres around VCP’s impactful Healthy4Longer project.

It’s an initiative we are proud to be piloting, built around a chair-based exercise programme designed to support our service users in improving mobility, strength, and overall wellbeing, helping them to stay active and independent for longer.

Focused on reducing falls and hospitalisations, the initiative empowers service users to thrive in their own homes.
Picture
Already the impact is becoming clear.

Analysis of key medical and wellbeing indicators taken after the first two months of the project running, showed those service users who participated experienced zero incidents of falls, zero calls to their GP or 111, and zero visits to A&E.
It also showed their overall wellbeing - encompassing both physical and mental health - has been positively impacted, potentially contributing to improved cognitive function.

“It’s an initiative we’re really proud to be piloting,” Cathy Naigow, VCP’s CEO & Registered Manager said.

“The programme has been particularly impactful for older adults and those with limited mobility, providing them with a tailored approach to physical activity that fits their needs.

“Healthy4Longer embodies VCP’s mission of proactive, person-centred care, creating brighter futures for our service users and reflecting our commitment to enhancing wellbeing, independence, and dignity for those we serve.”

Picture
Picture
At the core of Healthy4Longer is a structured, progressive series of chair-based exercises delivered in-home, complemented by holistic support for sustainable healthy habits.

These include: integrating movement into everyday life, easy-to-implement tips for improving nutrient and protein intake, encouraging hydration for better overall health, and techniques to enhance sleep quality.

VCP was honoured to win a High Commendation at the Home Care Awards 2024 – for our work supporting people affected by homelessness at Edward Alsop Court in the London Borough of Westminster, where we are part of an integrated approach to support some of the most vulnerable people in society.

“We pour our hearts and souls into our work and it was an honour to be highly commended at such a prestigious event,” Cathy added.

“It was more than recognition, it was validation of our commitment to providing exceptional care to those in need, and we are beyond excited to be nominated again this year for an initiative which is already having such a profound impact.”

The winners will be announced at the 2025 Home Care Awards Ceremony, happening on 7th March!

Spreading joy and warmth at Christmas

1/14/2025

With the unwavering commitment of our incredible team, we hand-delivered 115 meals to our service users just before Christmas. But these were not just meals. Each delivery was packed with so much more than food - there was love, warmth, and the knowledge that someone truly cared.

Alongside the meals, we included desserts, bottles of non-alcoholic bubbly, and festive socks to keep toes warm and hearts lighter. Each package was thoughtfully prepared, hand-delivered, and accompanied by warm smiles and a genuine sense of community.
Nashande, our Quality & Compliance Manager, tells us more:

"I am fortunate to witness the incredible ways our team comes together to make a difference in our community. This festive season was no exception, as we embarked on a heartfelt mission to deliver warmth, joy, and nourishment to those serve.
Picture
Thanks to the generosity and support of Marks & Spencer and Sainsburys, who partnered with us to provide the meal orders, we were able to ensure that each meal was not only nourishing but also a true festive treat. Their contribution reminded us of the power of collaboration in making meaningful impacts in people’s lives.
Watching the team work together to ensure that every single delivery was made on time and with care was nothing short of inspiring. Everyone came together, giving their time and energy, ensuring every delivery was made with care, attention, and festive spirit. The team’s determination to spread joy reminded me of just how lucky I am to work alongside such extraordinary people.

The joy on the faces of our service users as they received their meals and gifts was a poignant reminder of why we do what we do. For many, this festive touch was more than just a meal - it was a moment of connection, care, and the feeling that someone is thinking of them during this season of giving.

These moments are what this season is truly about. They reminded me, and all of us at VCP, that it doesn’t take grand gestures to make a profound impact - it’s about showing up, reaching out, and letting people know they matter.
Picture
As we reflect on another successful year of this initiative, I am filled with gratitude for our team and the privilege of serving our community. Together, we have not only delivered meals but also spread the true spirit of the season -kindness, compassion, and unity.
Picture

Here’s to continuing our mission of making a difference in the lives of those we serve, one thoughtful gesture at a time. From all of us at Vincentian Care Plus, thank you for letting us serve you and share in your lives.

May your 2025 be filled with love, warmth, and many moments of connection."

Keeping well in winter

12/16/2024

Working in homecare we all know how challenging the cold, dark winter months can be as we get older, when we are more susceptible to illness which can quickly impact long-term health, and more isolated from our communities, leading to a decline in mental wellbeing as well as physical.

One of our core values at VCP is to take action.  We know there is inadequate funding and that no political party has a ‘preventative’ social care commitment. However, we also believe we can train our carers in the skills of basic health monitoring and help the more vulnerable members of our society to keep warm and well through winter.

Here we set out a few helpful steps to help:

Keep moving
A little bit of activity now and then is a great way to help you keep warm, as well as help you maintain strength and mobility. This will differ for everyone, but even some simply chair-based exercises can make a big difference.
Eat well
It can sometimes be difficult to keep up the motivation to prepare meals, but it's good to try and keep to a routine where you can. Eat warming foods like soups and steps and drink hot drinks. Try to have a range of foods in your diet and try to eat fruit and vegetables each day – frozen and tinned vegetables can be just as good as fresh. It's also a good idea to keep your cupboards stocked with some basics just in case you can't get out to the shops.

Get your winter vaccinations
Respiratory viruses are more widespread in winter, so it's especially important to get your vaccinations.
Picture
Make sure your home is warm enough
Try to heat your home to a steady and comfortable temperature throughout the day in the rooms you use most, such as the living room and bedroom – usually around 18°C (64°F) is ideal. If there are rooms you don't use, like a spare bedroom, turn off the radiators in that room and close the doors. This will help you save on energy costs while keeping warm in winter. Keep curtains open during the day as this can help allow warmth into your home. Block out draughts, put down rugs and use a hot water bottle at night to keep you warm while you’re sleeping.
Stay connected
It can be harder to get out during the winter, but it is so important to keep connected to maintain mental wellbeing. Look for opportunities within your community or make time for regular contact with friends and family, in person or on the phone.

Small steps can make a big difference this winter, do reach out for support.

Celebrating 20 years of VCP

10/3/2024

“A journey rooted in love, compassion and commitment to serving our community with dignity and care.”

The words our Registered Manager and CEO Cathy Naigow at a very special event to mark the 20th anniversary of Vincentian Care Plus.

We were proud to gather at a highly prestigious Westminster location on Saturday (September 28th) to celebrate an incredible 20 years, and, most importantly, to celebrate the incredible people who make what we do possible.
Picture
Picture
It was a chance to bring together our team members, stakeholders and service-users with our founding sisters from the Daughters of Charity, to shine a light on VCP and its continued and growing importance.

Our charity was founded to provide exceptional care to the elderly and in need within our community in the London borough of Westminster. The ‘plus’ in our name reflects our commitment to doing more for the people we support and is driven by a clear social mission to address emerging poverties.

In the last 20 years whilst household wealth has tripled in the UK, poverty has continued to increase and deepen. Despite the input of 6 prime ministers, poverty has continued to grow at unprecedented levels.

It's estimated that around one in ten people over the age of 65 are malnourished or are at risk of malnutrition – that's over one million older people in the UK today.

2.1 million (or around 1 in 6) pensioners are living in poverty, 8.1 million (or around 2 in 10) working-age adults, and 4.2 million (or nearly 3 in 10) children.

Over 28% of people with informal caring roles live in poverty, 4 in 10 Asian families and a shocking 42% of black African families.
“When we first began two decades ago the vision was simple – people matter, to provide quality, person-centred care that truly make a difference in the lives of people,” Cathy continued.

“But we knew it would take more than just a vision, it would take dedication, hard work and above all, true commitment in putting our service users needs first. And as I look around in this room this evening, I am deeply moved.”
Picture
We are proud to provide more than 150,000 hours of care each year, supporting 250 people.

None of it would be possible without our dedicated staff members, the heart of everything we do, and we’re immensely proud to have one of the lowest staff turnover rates in the care sector, with 25 of our team receiving long service awards at our celebration.

We were privileged to welcome the sisters who founded our charity 20 years ago, including Sister Ellen who spoke of the values we were founded on, and which remain at the absolute centre of VCP.

“Everyone who encounters VCP knows that the service is built on relationships, one to one relationships of love and laughter, or joys and sorrows, shared respect and dignity for everyone. The holistic approach intends to envelop each person with whom it comes in contact, yes the people we support in their homes are the centre of our lives, but this approach also includes staff, partners, funders, and the way we conduct ourselves as an organisation internally and externally, in every arena. The integrity of the organisation demands that we proclaim our values in every layer of our organisation. Today we celebrate 20 years of the unbroken stream of caring delivered with distinct values, reaching back to the beginning.”

To everyone who joined us, thank you.

Presenting our long service awards with pride

10/3/2024

Shared values and going the extra mile – we were honoured to give thanks to some of our long-standing team members at our 20th anniversary celebrations.
Picture

“As I always say, one tree does not make a forest. The staff are the pillars of VCP,” our Registered Manager and CEO Cathy said.

Sentiments echoed by our Chairman Glen von Malachowski: “Our staff are our most important asset, the quality of what we do is determined by the commitment and consistency of our staff, to them it is not just a job. We are committed to the professionalisation of the carers’ role, and we will continue to fight for improvements in pay, training and recognition of the importance of their role.”
We were delighted to present 5 Year Service Awards to:
Farhiyo, Christopher, Lulaidaye, Yalemwork, Isabel, Oluwakemi, Nashande, Hawo, Nimisha, Sylyie, Pierrette, Jeosph, Sandra, Cathy, Sabina, Samuel, Angela, Jahidi and Kemi.

And 10 Year Service Awards to:

10 practical tips to help you age positively

9/16/2024

Ageing can be a fulfilling experience when approached with a positive mindset.

As we talked about in our previous blog, supporting people to ‘age positively’ is a key part of the care we provide, because we know that quality of life is greatly enhanced when people are supported to stay active, eat well and maintain connection and purpose.

Here are ten practical tips to help you age well and enjoy life at every stage:
Picture
1.Stay Active
Regular exercise strengthens muscles, improves balance to help prevent falls, and boosts energy and mental wellbeing.
Tip: Activity levels will differ for everyone, but a routine can really help, whether it’s yoga, walking or some simple stretches while the kettle is boiling.

2.Nourish Your Body
A balanced diet fuels your body and brain, helping maintain a healthy weight, reduce inflammation, and prevent chronic diseases.
Tip: Focus on nutrient-rich foods like leafy greens, nuts, and fish, while cutting back on processed sugars.

3.
Prioritise Mental Wellness
It is so important to focus not just on your physical wellbeing, but also on your mental wellbeing. From managing stress through mindfulness, to keeping your brain active with puzzles, reading or learning.
Tip: Try simple deep breathing exercises to help reduce stress.

4.
Keep Learning
Lifelong learning helps keep your mind agile and adaptable - and brings joy to your life. Whether it’s taking up a new hobby, or diving into a new subject.
Tip: It’s never too late to learn something new, have a look at classes local to you, or online.

5.
Maintain Social Connections
Loneliness and social isolation are common concerns as people age, but they don't have to be inevitable. Actively nurturing relationships with friends, family, and community can greatly enhance your quality of life and provide emotional support.
Tip: Make time for regular social interactions – whether it’s a weekly call to a friend or joining a new group.

6.
Prioritise Sleep
As we age, sleep patterns may change, but getting enough restful sleep is crucial for both your physical and mental health.
Tip: Go to bed at the same time each night to help establish a good routine.

7.
Stay Hydrated
Dehydration becomes a bigger risk as we age, but it’s often overlooked. Drinking enough water throughout the day can prevent fatigue, confusion, and digestive issues.
Tip: Make it a habit to carry a water bottle with you or set regular reminders to drink water throughout the day.

8.
Adapt Your Environment
As we age, adapting our living environment to suit our evolving needs is essential for maintaining independence and safety. Simple changes like adding better lighting, grab bars, or non-slip mats in key areas of your home can make a huge difference.
Tip: Regularly assess your home for potential hazards, and don’t hesitate to make adjustments.

9.
Embrace Change
Let go of negative ageing stereotypes – and instead see ageing as a time for growth and new opportunities.
Tip: Connect with like-minded people to share the joys and challenges!

10.
Plan for the Future - But Live in the Present
Whether it’s organising your finances or planning your care needs, it’s important to prepare for the future. But it’s also essential to focus on the present and find enjoyment in the small things.
Tip: Create a balance between planning for the future and living in the moment.
Ageing doesn’t have to be a negative experience.

By embracing these practical tips and adopting a proactive mindset, you can continue to live a life full of purpose, joy, and vitality, with the support you need, when and how you need it.

Embracing a fulfilling later life

8/14/2024

Ageing is an inevitable part of life, but how we experience it can vary widely. For a long time, getting older was often associated with decline, loss, and disengagement. However, the concept of "positive ageing" challenges these outdated notions, offering a more empowering perspective on the later stages of life.

What is Positive Ageing?
Positive ageing is a holistic approach to growing older that emphasises maintaining physical, mental, and social wellbeing. It’s about focusing on the potential that comes with age rather than just the limitations. Instead of viewing ageing as a period of decline, positive ageing encourages individuals to see it as a time of continued growth, learning, and contribution.

At its core, positive ageing is about living a fulfilling life, regardless of age. It involves staying active, both physically and mentally, staying connected to others, and finding meaning and purpose in everyday activities.
Supporting people to age positively is one of our key commitments here at Vincentian Care Plus.

We believe that everyone has the right to remain living where and how they choose, with a helping hand to enable independence and purpose.

We have outlined some of the key elements and benefits of positive ageing below, to explain why it’s such an important part of the care we deliver.
Picture
Key Elements of Positive Ageing

1. Physical Wellbeing:
Staying physically active is so important as we age. The level of physical activity will vary for everyone, but regular exercise, in any form, helps maintain mobility, strength, and balance, reducing the risk of falls and other age-related health issues. Good nutrition is just as important, prioritising a balanced diet to support overall health and vitality.

2. Mental Wellbeing:
Mental stimulation is vital as we get older. Engaging in activities that challenge the brain, such as games, reading, or learning new skills, can help maintain cognitive function. Positive ageing also involves managing stress and maintaining a positive outlook. Mindfulness practices, such as meditation and deep breathing, can be a brilliant way to help keep stress levels in check.
3. Social Connections:
Social interaction is a critical component of positive ageing. We know that maintaining strong relationships with family, friends, and community enhances emotional wellbeing. Loneliness can have severe consequences for older adults, so staying socially connected is key.

4. Purpose and Meaning:
Having a sense of purpose can significantly impact how we experience ageing. This can come from many sources, such as volunteering, pursuing hobbies, or spending time with family, friends and like-minded people in your community. It is fulfilling to stay engaged and keep contributing in valuable ways, at every age.
Picture
The Benefits of Positive Ageing
Adopting a positive ageing mindset has far reaching benefits. By staying physically and mentally fit, and socially engaged, people can maintain their independence for longer as they age, which is crucial for quality of life.  With the right support, your later years are a time to thrive.
